Lewis Creek provides the classroom instruction and live-fire qualification required for the course. Successful students leave with the course-completion certificate needed when applying for a North Carolina concealed handgun permit.
If you need a firearm and ammunition for the shooting portion, Dick will provide them at no additional charge. If you prefer to qualify with your own handgun, bring the appropriate ammunition for it.
Included in your tuition

Firearm and ammunition
A handgun and ammunition are provided if needed. Students using their own handgun bring their own ammunition.
Meals and refreshments
Coffee and pastries when you arrive, followed by chicken Creole, salad and dessert for lunch. Sodas, coffee and water are available all day. (If you have dietary restrictions, please let Dick know when registering, and Lewis Creek will do its best to accommodate your needs.)
Testing and qualification
A 20-question written test after the classroom review, followed by the live-fire qualification on the Lewis Creek pistol range.
Personal coaching
If you have difficulty during the shooting session, Dick will work with you on the fundamentals and help you build the skills needed.
Your certificate and course photograph
After successfully completing the requirements, you’ll receive your course-completion certificate. Dick takes a photograph of you with your target for the state documentation. The photograph is not printed, but Lewis Creek can text a copy to your phone if you ask.
The classroom session
A clear, comfortable morning.
Registration and classroom instruction take place in the main room of Dick’s home. The morning covers the laws concerning the use of deadly force, where concealed handguns may and may not be carried, and how to apply for a North Carolina concealed handgun permit.
Following a review, you’ll take a straightforward 20-question test designed to confirm your understanding—not catch you by surprise.
The shooting session
Qualification with help close by.
The shooting portion is held just across the lawn on the Lewis Creek pistol range. You’ll fire at a silhouette target from three, five and seven yards.
The qualification is designed to be manageable. If you encounter difficulty, Dick will work with you on the fundamentals and help you complete the shooting requirement safely.

Completion of the course does not itself issue a concealed handgun permit. After successfully completing the course, eligible applicants apply through the sheriff’s office in their county of residence.
